Grassick is the first female athlete from the University of Saskatchewan to win the honour. She just completed her fourth year with the Huskies, and averaged 18.8 points per game in the regular season.
At the national championship tournament in March, Grassick averaged 20.7 points per game. In the final, she scored 34 points against the top-seeded Carelton Ravens, securing the tournament’s MVP award and leading the Huskies to the school’s third national title.
After the national championship victory, Grassick’s head coach Lisa Thomaidis called her the best university basketball player in the country.
“Our quarter-final was probably the toughest game going in, and then I just thought after that day we just were rolling. Our team, I thought, was just super focused – played their best basketball when it meant the most,” she said.
“Gage was incredible. She showed why she’s the best player in the country right now, and it’s not even close,” Thomaidis added. “We had lots of contributions from many different players, and that really was the difference maker.”
Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma was named the male recipient of the Lois and Doug Mitchell awards.
“We are so proud of the eight nominees this year. They are exceptional student-athletes and citizens,” said Lois Mitchell, chair of the Canadian Athletic Foundation’s board of trustees.
“Gage and Taylor had outstanding seasons, demonstrating their adaptability to any condition they have faced on the field of competition and in the classroom. They are excellent recipients of the Lois and Doug Mitchell Awards.”
Other notable recipients of the Lois and Doug Mitchell Awards include Edmonton Elks quarterback Tre Ford, swimmer, Canadian Olympic swimmer Kylie Masse and Canadian record-holding sprinter Audrey Leduc.
Grassick is also a three-time Canada West champion, the Canada West player of the year in 2024-25, a two-time first-team all-star and the Prince Albert Female Athlete of the Year in 2023.
In each of her four years as a Huskie, Grassick was named a U Sports Academic All-Canadian.
She has one more year left of eligibility with the Huskies, as she enters her fifth and final year with the team.
