Coming into the match up UBC had never won a playoff game in Saskatoon and had an 0-8 record, while the Huskies were 12-2 against the Thunderbirds in the playoffs, with the B.C. team’s last win coming in 1976.
In front of 1,806 fans, two safeties conceded by UBC in the first quarter gave the Dogs a 4-0 lead.
Huskies head coach Scott Flory said while it was a slow start he was impressed with his squad’s defence.
“That front six,” he said. “Those guys, they’re outstanding football players, (real) difference makers.”
The second quarter was much more action packed, starting off with Huskies quarterback Jake Farrell airing out a 27-yard touchdown pass to receiver Daniel Wiebe for a 11-0 score.
An illegal grounding play from UBC quarterback Drew Viotto who threw the ball out of play while in the end zone extended the Huskies lead to 13-0.
U of S kicker Lukas Scott nailed a 27-yard field goal to make it 16-0 before the end of the first half.
Flory said he noticed Farrell seemed a bit nervous to start the game.
“We’ll find stuff to ease him in a bit,” he said. “He’s just got to operate the offence. We had to adapt a little bit on the fly.”
Both sides were held off the board in the third quarter, with four straight drives resulting in turnovers.
“That third quarter, those turnovers we just got to clean that stuff up,” he said. “We just turned the ball over, it was all on us — 100 per cent errors on us.”
In the fourth quarter Scott nailed an 18-yard field goal, extending the Huskies lead to 19-0.
A 13-yard touchdown pass from Farrell found receiver Dawson Lennea making it 26-0 Huskies, and a late touchdown pass from UBC made the final score 26-7.
“(We’re) getting ready for Hardy Cup coming back here,” said Flory.
